Traceability and its influence on the commercial conditions ofagricultural products in Ecuador
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: This article analyzes the business opportunities that agricultural products would have if they
are certified and have traceability systems. Methodology: The methodology is based on combining qualitative and quantitative information-gathering techniques, such as on-site visits to different producer associations, participation in workshops with government entities, interaction with agricultural producers,
interviews, and surveys of consumers. Results: The findings show that consumers prefer to purchase
agricultural products from recognized sites that have certifications ensuring food safety, regardless of
price. There are improvements in the commercial conditions of certain agricultural products when they have traceability systems, and the use of Blockchain technology in agricultural products constitutes a proposal for enhancing production in a country. Discussion: This research demonstrates that the agricultural sector is at a turning point where perceived quality and transparency have surpassed price as the main drivers of purchase decisions. This aligns with a global trend towards conscious consumption, where the origin of food is as important as the product itself. Conclusions: Thus, it is concluded that traceability, in addition to being a guideline in the country, constitutes a competitive strategy for agricultural and livestock producers, marking the differentiation of their products in both domestic and international markets. The improvement in commercial conditions observed in certified products reinforces the idea that traceability is an investment and not a cost.
